Indonesia is the world's largest producer and exporter of palm oil. In 2024, Indonesia produced 45.50 million tonnes and exported around 23.99 million tonnes. Indonesia accounted for 57% of the world production and 50% exports of palm oil. Indonesian oil palm industry is important in enhancing the wellbeing of smallholders which account for about 41% of total oil palm planted areas. Indonesia introduced ‘Indonesia Sustainable Palm Oil’ (ISPO) in 2011, aiming to support sustainable economic, social and environmental objectives. The core principles of ISPO are to ensure sustainable management through ISPO; improve the acceptance and competitiveness of Indonesian palm oil in domestic and international markets; and to improve efforts to accelerate GHG emissions reduction.

Malaysia is the second largest producer and exporter of palm oil in the world. In 2024, Malaysia produced 19.33 million tonnes and exported 16.90 million tonnes of palm oil. Malaysia accounted for 24% and 35% of the world total production and exports of palm oil, respectively. In 2015, Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) Certification was launched with the main objective to ensures traceability from plantation to final product, guarantees deforestation free production and embeds environmental protection, fair labour practices and circular economy principles. MSPO is a national sustainability standard covering the entire palm oil supply chain including smallholders, estates, dealers, mills and refiners.

Honduras ranked at number 12 of the world's top palm oil producers. Oil Palm in Honduras occupies around 235,000 hectares of agricultural land, producing around 500,000 tonnes of palm oil in 2024 with smallholders are dominant. Comprising over 18,700 smallholders, organized in social - sector enterprises, cooperatives and as individual producers. Collectively, they own and operate 68% of total palm oil planted area in Honduras. Honduras is a net palm oil exporter. Around 78% of the country's production in 2024 were exported, primarily to Latin America countries.

Papua New Guinea produced 690,000 tonnes of palm oil in 2024 and exported around 94% of the production. Palm oil is a leading agricultural commodity in Papua New Guinea, providing employment to more than 200,000 people in the palm oil sector. In 2025, ‘National Oil Palm Policy 2025–2030’ was launched aiming at transforming Papua New Guinea’s largest agricultural commodity into a stronger driver of growth, inclusivity, and sustainability. At the heart of the policy is the empowerment of smallholders, who make up a significant share of national palm oil production.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) cultivates more than 175,000 hectares of palm oil plantation. Around 62% of the palm oil cultivation is owned by 54,000 smallholders. DRC produces on average of 300,000 tonnes of palm oil annually. Most of the palm oil produced in DRC exported to its neighbouring country such as Burundi, Uganda and Rwanda.

Colombia is the largest producer of palm oil in Latin America and the fourth largest in the world. In 2023, Colombia produced 1.84 million tonnes of palm oil from the oil palm harvested area of 535,000 hectares. There are 161 municipalities in 21 regions of the country involved in the palm oil industry, creating around 200,000 jobs, both direct and indirect. About 70% of palm oil produced was sold domestically and 30% for export markets, with Europe as a major destination.

Palm oil is the most important edible oil in Ghana. Oil World estimated that Ghana produced about 590,000 tonnes of palm oil in 2023 from around 406,000 hectares of the oil palm harvested area. The Government of Ghana inaugurated a Tree Crop Development Authority in September 2020 to regulate and create a conducive environment for the growth and development of tree and industrial crops including oil palm.

Nigeria is the fifth largest palm oil producing countries in the world and the largest producer in the African region. In 2023, Nigeria produced 1.46 million tonnes of palm oil from about 620,000 hectares oil palm planted area. Most of the oil palm planted areas are owned by smallholders which account for more than 80% of the total land area. In view of this, the oil palm smallholders play a pivotal role in the development of the oil palm industry in the country.
