DR. PUAH CHIEW WEI

Dr. Puah Chiew Wei is the Director of Strategy and Policy of CPOPC. She graduated from University of Malaya, Malaysia with a Bachelor of Science (Major in Applied Chemistry and Minor in Statistics) and Ph.D. in Chemistry. She has more than 20 years of working experience in the Malaysian oil palm industry.

Prior to be appointed as the Director of Strategy and Policy, Dr. Puah served as Minister at the Embassy of Malaysia and Mission of Malaysia to the European Union in Brussels, Belgium, concurrently as the Regional Manager (Europe) of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) from September 2017 to June 2022. Her other appointments included the Head of Sustainability and Climate Change Centre, MPOB (2013 to 2016) and Leader of Sustainability and Climate Change Group, MPOB (2009 – 2013). She was seconded to the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Malaysia from November 2008 to March 2011, particularly for the implementation of the biodiesel programme in Malaysia.

Dr. Puah has authored and co-authored more than 170 publications in journals, book chapters, technical publications and reports as well as presentations in conferences and seminars at the national and international levels. She has five (5) patents filed and granted based on her research findings in the palm oil research including one technology that has been commercialised.

She was conferred the Darjah Kebesaran “Ahli Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah (A.I.S.)” by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor in 2014 for her contributions.

She has received several international awards, notably Best Woman Invention Award by the Vietnam Fund for Supporting Technological Creations (VIFOTEC) at the 22nd International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX) in 2011; Special Award from Russia for Significant Contribution to Scientific & Technological Advancement and High Achievements at the 32nd International Exhibition on Inventions, New Techniques and Products, Geneva, Switzerland in 2004; and Henry Goh Environmental Innovation Award for the Most Environmental Friendly Invention at the ITEX 2002 awarded by Malaysian Invention and Design Society in March 2002. She has also received several awards from MPOB for her contributions and achievements including two Excellence Service Awards (2008, 2021) and three Gold Medal Research Awards (2005, 2012, 2015).
