FG Moves to Join Global Palm Oil Council as Full Member
The Federal Government is considering upgrading Nigeria’s status from observer to full member of the Council of Palm Oil-Producing Countries. The move aims to strengthen Nigeria’s role in global palm oil diplomacy.
The decision followed a meeting in Abuja this Friday between Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar and the Council’s Secretary General, Izzana Salleh. Nigeria’s current observer status is set to expire at the end of the year.
The Council includes major producers such as Indonesia and Malaysia and focuses on trade, sustainability and market access. It has also approved a two-year waiver of membership fees for Nigeria if it joins as a full member.
Tuggar said palm oil is vital to Nigeria’s economy, noting that the country produces about 1.4 million metric tonnes but consumes nearly 3 million. He added that full membership would boost Nigeria’s voice in global commodity discussions and support efforts to increase production.
