A Spark of Change: Unveiling Realities and Shaping Narratives of the Palm Oil Industry

I am profoundly grateful to the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) for extending an esteemed invitation, beckoning me as the 2nd Runner Up - Circular Economy of #YoungElaeis Ambassador 2023, to participate as a panelist in the illustrious CPOPC's Engagement with Academicians and Student Leaders from Higher Institutions of Learning. The ambiance at the Hotel Royale Chulan in Kuala Lumpur on the 12th of December 2023 was nothing short of electric, and it was an honor to be a part of such a distinguished gathering.

One of the highlights of the event was the eye-opening presentation by Ms. Lakshmy Naidu from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), delving into the "8 Myths Surrounding Palm and Debunking Health." Naidu's elucidation on the prevalent misconceptions surrounding palm oil and its impact on health was not just informative but also challenged existing notions, setting the stage for a broader discourse on palm oil's realities. A pivotal moment came with Mr. Erick Firmansyah SP, a lecturer from INSTIPER, taking the stage to unravel the intricacies of "Indonesia Smallholders Readiness in Addressing the European Union Delegated Regulation (EUDR)." The discussion on EUDR was not just a technical overview but a glimpse into the future of the palm oil industry, emphasizing the preparedness required to navigate evolving regulatory landscapes. Equally enthralling was Dr. Yeong Sheng Tey's presentation from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) on "Getting Malaysian Palm Oil Industry Ready for the EUDR: Gaps and Opportunities." Dr. Tey's insights provided a roadmap for the industry, outlining potential pitfalls and avenues for growth, making the audience contemplate the transformative journey ahead. The event's richness continued with Ms. Farras Hanifah Azizah from IPB University, sharing her expertise on "The Involvement of Millennials in Educating Themselves on Safety and Nutrition Issues of Palm Oil." In a world driven by conscious consumerism, her insights underscored the influential role that millennials play in shaping the narrative surrounding palm oil through informed choices.

As the event unfolded, it became apparent that these presentations were not just about disseminating information but igniting a spark for change. The intersection of diverse perspectives showcased the complexity of the palm oil industry and the need for collaborative efforts to foster sustainable practices. My participation in the panel discussion, centered around "What we have not done enough on addressing negative perceptions of palm oil and the way forward," allowed me to share personal insights. While acknowledging Malaysia's commendable efforts in palm oil promotion, the lingering negative perceptions were dissected. Despite robust initiatives, misinformation propagated by irresponsible individuals on social media platforms remains a challenge. The visual narratives painted by some consuming countries in their school textbooks further contribute to skewed perspectives. Media and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from non-producing countries, at times, showcase bias, amplifying the uphill battle in correcting global perceptions of palm oil.

In conclusion, the CPOPC event was not merely a conference; it was a convergence of minds, a symphony of diverse voices echoing the challenges and triumphs of the palm oil industry. It beckons us to look beyond the surface, challenge preconceived notions, and actively participate in steering the narrative toward sustainability. As we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of the palm oil industry, let us embrace the collective responsibility to dispel myths, foster informed discussions, and usher in an era where palm oil is celebrated for its positive contributions to our global community.
